-15 produce globular mode, produce cleanest weld metal and convex profile
that is |
best
"hot cracking resistance" and penetration preferred for narrow
grooves and other than flat. |

E3XX-16
and E3XX-17 are both recommended for flat groove position and horizontal
fillet. |
Electrodes -16, -17 both produce fine spray mode, -17 is
not recommended for other than flat position. |
Electrode -16 can be used for all position and is common
for overlay, as it provides smoother surface finish than -17. |
Electode
-17 also used where minimum clean up is desired, produce good appearance and
concave profile. |

Good to know
tips when welding Stainless Steel On The Go |
Stainless
steels are commonly divided into the following general groups: |
(1) Chromium
Martensitic (4XX Series) |
(2) Chromium
Ferritic (4XX Series) |
(3) Austenitic
(2XX Series, Cr-Ni-Mn and 3XX Series Cr-Ni) |
(4) Precipitation-hardening (grades are assigned
designations based on their Cr and Ni contents) |
For
low or high temperature, corrosive or any critical applications always
confirm electrode choice |
with wire
manufacturer. |
For
similar metal joints, use filler metal of matching composition, |
(e.g.: weld
304L with 308L wire), (316 with 316, and 308L with 308L wire). |
Dissimilar
joining, use the lower alloyed of the two base metals (e.g. use 308 to join
304 to 316). |
If
both metals are low carbon (3XXL), then use low carbon, 3XXL filler metal as
well. |
